Deputy Commissioner, Research & Consolidated Planning
Steve Janes, Deputy Commissioner, Research and Consolidated Planning, began working for the Department of Housing & Community Development as a city planner in 1987. Since coming aboard, Mr. Janes has served as chief of the Community Development Block Grant Office and Assistant Commissioner for Research. The Illinois native has an extensive background in American urban history, the Community Development Block Grant program, and federal housing programs. As Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Janes oversees and manages budgets for personnel; CDBG program staff; nonprofit partners; and outreach. He also ensures that the Agency is in fiscal, programmatic, and regulatory compliance with federal laws. Mr. Janes earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in community planning and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in urban studies.
