City and Upton Community Celebrate Progress of PS103 Renovations

PS 103 Groundbreaking

In early July, City officials, Beloved Community Service Corporation, and the Upton community celebrated what would have been Justice Thurgood Marshall’s 114th birthday in style. Stakeholders gathered to kick off renovations to PS103, the former Henry Highland Garnet School, where the Supreme Court Justice attended school during his youth.

The City awarded development rights for the historical property to Beloved Community Services CDC back in February 2020 through its Request for Proposals process.  Beloved plans to use the facility as office space, and to house The Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice and Ethics in addition to office space for the National Park Service.

This project is an estimated investment of $6.1 million. Watch video.
